Exercise 2: Illustrated Typography
Week 4 (26/04/2023)
Choosing of assignment name
Fig. 1.1 Generated name
We were told to generate our assignment topic using the Pictionary Generator. We will be using two names to create our illustrated typography. The names that I have generated were Graph and City.
Sketching
Fig. 1.2 Sketching
I have attempted sketching with the graph being in my mind, which was a horrible idea and it turned out bad. Next up, I tried mimicking the graph curves to make out the letters of "City", but it also turned out looking not as I wanted.
After that, I changed perspective into focus the words on the "City". In which, cities were formed by tall skyscraper buildings, which was why I changed the letters to have isometric look to make it looked 3-Dimensional. I have also added the crane beside the letter to act as the Y-axis of the graph.

Week 05 (05/05/2023)

Moodboard
Fig. 1.4 Pictures for the Moodboard
The art style that I was going to present was isometric style, which was something challenging to me as it shows different shades of colors. It requires a good grasp of 3-Dimensional space as the object has a light source make it looks like a sun shinning to a building.
Fig. 1.5 Graph patterns
In conjunction with the letter "Graph" that was generated for me. I also have the integration of the graph pattern as part of the typography in mind. This is to make the typography integrate with the sketching in-progress style of the graph, as a way of expressing city planning as well.
Fig. 1.6 Initial Color board
At first, I would like to choose a colors that were related to the city. For instance the red and brown brick color and the concrete grey, which matches on how the city looks. I have also considered on making my typography colorful with different colors to make it more appealing.
Digitalization
Fig. 2.0 Picking of colors
As mentioned, I would like the colors of my type to be either matching city colors or being colorful. Then, my decision was to chose the city like color, as it will make it look more more natural instead of the colorful style. Besides that, too many colors in a color palette might be too complicated and might ruined the whole work.
Fig. 2.1 Integration of Windows and lines
The integration of the windows was also an initiative in order to make the letters more look alike to the buildings in the city, instead of a flat surface of wall without windows. Isometric shades were also integrated to have different shades at different angles to maintain the isometric style.
On top of that, The curvy road lines were added to mimic the road as well representing the graph lines from graphs. The tall mechanical crane was also added to be the x or y axis of the graph.
Week 07 (17/05/2023)
Digitalization cont...
Fig. 3.0 Integration of graph patterns and axis
The graph patterns was integrated as the floor of the city, as the foundation of the city planning. Meanwhile the mechanical crane has shadow that represented the x and y axis of the graph. The crane guided the construction of the city by casting a shadow on the graph pattern.
Fig. 3.1 City vegetation
Meanwhile, there were also some minor city vegetation happening around the city by adding some trees to make the city feel more alive. Cars were also added on the roads to show that the city is lively with daily activities and operating well. Road Lamps were also added so that it can make the city more immersive as if there were applications for it to light up the roads.
Final Illustrated Typography
Reflection
Experience
I have experienced the way of integrating isometric style into my design, it has allow me to slowly appreciate this style and its uniqueness. There were a few trial and error along the way of choosing the shades of color for different surface for the isometric geometry, but it was a fun experience in experimenting with the properties for isometric styles.
Observation
I observed that the isometric style was able to make an artwork become more 3 dimensional, it could give a slight illusion for vector art to make it less flat. With a greater contrast to the shades on the geometry, it will be able to further display the 3 dimensional property of the isometric style.
Findings
I found out that by adding minor details such as the one I did for this assignment which was to have a minor vegetation to the city. Such minor detail was able to elevate the the whole artwork into something more immersive and better. Windows as such was added could also add more details to the city buildings and making it look like a real place to stay for the citizens.
