Moodboard

Fig. 1.1 Tunnel Books

The tunnel books were one of my best inspiration. It has inspired me to create triptych that looked like tunnel books with different layers and shades. The tunnel books a few cutout papers with different designs that were stacked onto each others to create a complete artwork. The layering of the papers were what made the tunnel books interesting. Once there was a light source that shine through them, the appearance of layering will be made.

Fig. 1.2 Background designs with layers

These reference pictures were also background designs with good layering. These pictures were also one of the few references that helped me with appreciated more of background with good layering. With the help of some layering, a good background shall be able to elevate storytelling and the visuals of an artwork.

Fig. 1.3 Triptych with frames

These triptych with frames also inspired me to create my own triptych with meaningful frames that will relate to each triptych. The frames could also act as a good border and barrier to separate the contents from each triptych to let others know that the stories told in sections.

Story Chosen

The Premature Burial

This story is a collection of non-fiction and fiction about the people being buried alive and were acknowledge by others as dead. The story tells about the emotion of being buried alive and was unable to take any actions. One of the story from the collection I have picked was about an officer that fell out of his horse and broke his skull. He was healing from the injuring well but he was found dead after a few days.

After that, he was acknowledged to be dead and was buried hurriedly. Fortunately, there was a person sitting beside his grave and noticed some subtle movement of the soil, which meant that he was alive. He was dug up and sent to the hospital for treatment. At the end, he was acknowledged to be alive and he met his relatives and friends again in the hospital.

Sketching
Fig. 2.0 Sketching of Triptych

There were 3 panels in the triptych. The first panel was the one where the officer fell from his horse with his head leaning to the ground. Next, the second panel show that a person was sitting beside the officer's grave, while the officer was struggling out of his coffin and the soil. Lastly, the officer met with his relatives and family in the hospital.

Fig. 2.1 Initial digitalization and Color palette

Initially I have made an old heritage buildings in Britain. I tried to adjust the perspective of the building but it just seems weird with the whole panel. The second picture showed the color palette that were used for the 3 respective panels of the triptychs.

Fig. 2.2 The progression and layers of the triptych

This compilation showed the breakdown of the 3 triptych panels. The compilation was in descending order, which was from the final stage to the initial stage.
  1. The panels were finished with the topping of frame that has their own meaning that matched with the panels respectively.
  2. Characters and foreground details were added to the panels. Actions and even more precise details from the story was shown in this layer.
  3. The middle foreground were added with background objects as well as minor characters. This layer added some immersive elements to the triptych and as the supporting layer from the character and foreground layer.
  4. This is the front background details layer with details of objects and elements that would be a good supporter to blend with the middle foreground.
  5. This is the background details layer with minor details that would be a bit far in the triptych. This layer was added to not neglect about the importance of the background layer. As sometimes the background might be ignored and under-designed.
  6. A mountain was split into 3 panels and act as an "Easter egg" of the triptych as it was used to connect and have connection between the panels. The existence of the mountain could also meant that the situation and events happened at the same area of space which the character lived.
The Triptych Frame

Fig. 2.3 The triptych frame

The frame was done in a way that it was related to incident's location. Pillars of buildings was inspired by the Britain's heritage building pillars. The second one will be the the frame of a graveyard entrance. The third one will be the door entrance to the hospital ward.

Feedback

Week 14
Good use of foreground, middle and background. Your technical skills are good too. Good work.

Reflection

Experience
I have experienced the process of creating tunnel book style. It has been fun as I was able to explore a recommended style by the lecturer. I have learnt about layering my artworks which could be applied in my future artworks. The experience of storytelling was also acquired by creating the 3 panel triptych which I needed to split the story into 3 panels.

Observation
I observed that there were some ambient light for the tunnel books that I have researched. Those lights were shine below the tunnel book, each layer will block some light from reaching to the next layer above, which made it having some ambient light around them. I should be mindful of these details in the future.

Findings
I have found that the colours used for each panels were just different shades of each other. I just needed to tweak the colours into darker or lighter shade of respective colours. Besides, I must also be mindful that the colours that I have used must just be one so that the whole triptych would not be too complicated.
